Distance: 4.82k Monday, 4.82k Thursday, 7.36k Yesterday

Time: 34:18 Monday, 32:34 Thursday, 52:34 Friday

Monday’s run, just the day after the Times Colonist 10k was just a bit of a recovery run, so I wasn’t going for speed. Good thing, because by the time I got out, there was a full-blown wind warning outside. The good news is that it was a headwind on the way out, so it was a bit easier coming in. The bad news is that it was a virtual wall of wind in places, which really slowed me down. It didn’t bother me as much as usual, probably because I knew it was windy before I set out, so I wasn’t trying to be too fast. I almost didn’t go at all, but I’m going to be running from Tofino to Uclulet in 6 weeks (!), and what are the chances that course ISN’T windy, right? I wore my husband’s kind-of-broken-but-not-really headphones and the wind caused them to blow around so much the volume kept going up and down, which was annoying. I also had to hold onto the cord to keep it from getting snagged.

In contrast to Monday’s run, I did try for some speed on Thursday. I was considering doing 8k rather than 5k, but I was too tired. The first two km were tough, and it took me a while to get into a groove. It was absolutely gorgeous out, which helped. I was actually thinking I would have another 34 minute run, but I managed to get it together at the end to finish at a decent time. This run also put me over the 100k mark for the month, for the first time. Yay!

Yesterday’s run was another really windy run, except this time the headwind was on the way back. I decided to do an extra half loop, because I didn’t do the extra one on Thursday, and I should have just sucked it up and did it then. The wind was so strong just after the turnaround after the bridge that it just knocked all the energy out of me. The first two km were the only ones under 7 minutes, and I felt like I dragged myself back to the car after finishing the half loop. My time was discouraging, but I have to remind myself that I’m not going for time at the marathon; I’m just trying to get it done. It will likely be windy at least part of the way, so I need to be able to run in the wind without it taking all of my energy.

It also looks like I’m going to be getting one more practice race in before the marathon, too. Instead of doing the relay for the Oak Bay Kool 1/2 Marathon, I’m going to do the whole thing. It’s not a distance I haven’t done before (once), and it’ll be a good dress rehearsal for the marathon, since it’s smaller than the Times Colonist 10k, with a cap of only 750 runners. I’ll also get a shiny medal for finishing!

Distance: 4.87k

Time: 32:49

So today’s run was nothing special. Just a drizzly run to get in an extra run before the TC 10k on Sunday. I started off pretty slow, with the first kilometer done in 7:30, but then I picked up the pace to finish about 30 seconds slower than my fastest time. In fact, I felt like this might be one of those not-so-great runs because I heard my first split through RunKeeper and was discouraged. I thought that if I was really slow, it might not put me in a good frame of mind for the race. But I managed to get a good time in the end, which was encouraging.

I’m trying to decide whether to bring headphones to the race or not. I always run with music, so I’m worried that I will not like running without them, and the run will seem longer. However, there is going to be a lot of people there, so staying alert would be a good idea. Plus, it would be cool to hear from the crowds, especially at the finish line. So maybe I will bring them, but keep the volume low, and turn the music off at the end.

My next post will be a race report for the TC 10k. I’ll try to get it out on Sunday evening, but it depends on how tired I am. Because I’m “only” running 10k, I’m gonna try to go fast (for me) and make 1 hr my goal finishing time. It’s ambitious, since I haven’t even gone under 30 minutes for a 5 k, but who knows? Good luck to all the other racers, and I’ll see y’all on the other side!

Distance: 4.82k Saturday, 4.96k today

Time: 34:52 Saturday, 34:23 today

You know those perfect runs, the ones where the weather is just right, and you feel like you could go forever? Today was not one of those runs. Today was one of those just-get-it-over-with runs, where I felt grumpy heading out and didn’t feel any better coming back. I know that part of it was that I had a bad day at work yesterday, and I just didn’t have the normal attitude I have when I run. Normally, I’m glad to get out of the house and push myself a bit, although my last two times have been a bit slow. I’m also usually feel much better after my run, but not today.

The weather went from cloudy to sunny with rain, and then a headwind picked up just before the last bit of my run. I know this didn’t help me feel any better, especially since my right knee also started to hurt near the end of the run. Again, it stopped hurting after my run, so I’m just waiting for it to go away (I hope).

On the good side, I got my new headphones yesterday, and they work well. They stay put in my ears, and sound good. I’m trying to figure out a place to put them so the cat won’t get at them, but also so that I won’t forget to bring them. Any suggestions?

Distance: 5.08k

Time: 35:17

Today, I think I was reminded of how you choose you own destiny. I went for my run, doubtful that it would be good, and it wasn’t. It started with too much wine last night (two glasses), and not a very restful sleep. Then the milk had gone bad, so I ruined my coffee and couldn’t drink it. I tried another cup with powdered milk (the only milk we had) and it was just nasty. Since I had to go out and get more milk anyway, I decided to get my run over with.

The weather wasn’t too bad, cool and drizzly. I decided to wear my rain jacket, which I really don’t like wearing because it’s too loose, but I didn’t want to get soaked. My new headphones had issues because the band around the back of my head kept rubbing against the collar of my jacket. They didn’t feel like they were on right. I’d also gotten used to being able to change the volume from the headphones, so it took a bit to get the right volume. I started off way too fast, so I started losing steam about halfway through my run. And I got a stitch in my side at the second kilometer that didn’t go away until the end of the run. So, by the end of the run, I felt just as grumpy as I did when I started. Usually I feel way better. The only thing that lifted my mood was a big caramel macchiato from Starbucks. Finally some caffeine!

Someone on Twitter said you’re only one run away from a great run, meaning that if this one sucked, the next one will be (hopefully) better. My next run will be in a new month, so I hope I can start fresh. Not the best way to end this month, but at least I got out there!

Distance: 4.80k

Time: 43:43

Today was wet, but easier than Monday, despite the fact that I started week 4 of the “Couch to 5k” program. The shortest running interval this week is 3 minutes, with two 5 minute intervals. Once again, I extended the program a bit because it always seems to end long before I finish my route. Happily, I heard not a single peep from my left leg even with the extra running so I’m optimistic that that’s finally all over.

The one major annoyance was with my iPhone earbuds. Because it was so rainy, I had to attach my iPhone to my waistband with the cord for the earbuds under my waterproof jacket. The cord then kept getting pulled down below my jacket, jerking the buds out of my ears. Of course they did not fully fall out due to my headband so they just annoyed the heck outta me. I kept trying to adjust them mid-run, and I was sorely tempted to just yank them out altogether. The only reason I didn’t was because then I would have to try to tuck them into a pocket or something. Thus, there is no song to run to today. I hope that when I get my armband the cord won’t tug so much and the earbuds will stay in place. Any day now!
