Distance: 4.95k yesterday, 4.88k today

Time: 34:45 yesterday, 34:08 today

So, I realized that I have run three runs this week, without having any postings up. I did a quick post about my 7k run on Tuesday on my iPhone but it hadn’t been published yet; it’s there now. Both yesterday and today were beautiful days to be out running. Both days were sunny, with a mild headwind on the way to the bridge, so I got a tailwind back. Yesterday, after much thought, I wore a short-sleeved t-shirt with pants instead of wearing a long-sleeved shirt with crops. I realized after about a kilometer that I should have gone the other way, because my legs were warm but my arms were cold! So, today I wore a long-sleeved top and my new cropped lululemons, and I really think it was more comfortable. In fact, if the weather holds, I will wear capris more often. But enough about fashion.

One of the running groups I follow on Twitter (I think it was Runner’s World) put out an article recently on the rules of running. My personal favorite was that if you care even a little bit about being called a runner versus a jogger, you’re a runner. To some, it may just be semantics, but I actually get a bit offended if I’m called a jogger. To me, it sounds like someone who’s a poser. Someone who doesn’t take it seriously. Which is strange, because I never thought of myself as a serious runner; I’m not even sure I’ve been running long enough to be one. I do know that I will run in any weather (except for heavy snow, I don’t have the right shoes), and that I feel very “hardcore” when I run in the rain during a wind warning. Does that make me a “serious” runner? Or just a dork running in the rain?

Speaking of “serious” running, I have modified my New Year’s Resolution a bit. Although it was really fun to run the 10k race a couple of weeks ago, I was the slowest person in my age group. Not that I’m really upset about it, but I’m not sure that running in races where I come in last all the time is not the best way to spend my money. So, I’ve decided to try to do some “Fun Runs” when I can instead of races. There is a 5k on Valentine’s Day for Muscular Dystrophy that I’ve signed up for, instead of killing myself trying a 12 k this weekend. This run looks much more relaxed, and I get a t-shirt this time! Still planning to do one each month, although I’m not 100% of my work schedule yet, so I haven’t signed up for any other runs. Has anyone else done any of these kinds of runs? Are people still competitive? Or is it just a big party for runners? I’ll find out next week, and keep you posted!

Distance: 5.02k

Time: 36:02

Not a bad time today, with a wicked headwind the whole way there. The run itself was a bit rough, with the wind, and I started off too fast, and all I had before I left was a cup of weak coffee. My right knee twinged the whole way, although I was able to ignore it for most of the way back. Good thing I have three more days and only one more run before my 10k.

Speaking of which, I’ve been thinking about what I want to accomplish with this race. I really signed up for this race, and made my New Year’s Resolution, to get used to running in a crowd before my marathon. I’m not doing it to win any medals. So, my only goal for this race is to beat my time from last week, which was just over 72 minutes. Nothing more. It’ll be overwhelming enough to run with hundreds of other people on a course I’ve never done before; I don’t need to add any unrealiatic expectations. I’ll definitely post about the run afterwards.

Distance: 4.94k

Time: 36:42

Today I traded running in the rain for running during a wind warning, with gusts up to 80 km/h, according to the weather app on my iPhone. So my time is pretty good, considering the worst of the headwind was on the way back. On the plus side, the walkway was almost deserted, aside from some other hardcore runners and a couple of dog-walkers.

I signed up for my first “real” race last night, complete with other people. It’s the Cobble Hill 10k, on January 24. I’ve never even run that far all at once before. According to the leaflet I saw online, the course is pretty flat, so I should be okay because my 8k run is pretty hilly. Besides, I probably won’t be the last one to finish, unless something hoes horribly wrong. This race is part of a race series, so I should be able to find one each month to do until April, when I’ll probably do the TC 10k. Then I just have to find a race in May, and I’ve covered the first 6 months of the year!

So at least I’ll be able to keep that New Year’s resolution, since the fruit and veggie one has not been successful. Most days I have no trouble getting enough fruit, especially because I’ve become hooked on smoothies, but getting two servings of veggies has been harder. The only real excuse is that I don’t make dinner very often, and the hubby isn’t big on veggies. I should just buy more salad. And bring it to work. As for my other resolution, it’s been hard it’s really too vague of a resolution. Maybe I should have just resolved to be a bigger bitch.

So I planned on doing an 8k tomorrow, but now I’m wondering if I should do 10k instead. Maybe this upcoming race shouldn’t be the first time I’ve done that distance. Any advice out there?

Distance: 5.24k

Time: 37:14

Picked a good time for a run today. It was raining off and on, but the sun was out! I’ve been thinking about my New Year’s resolutions, especially about the goal to run a race per month. I did not sign up in time for the Resolution Run today (and it would have cost $55!), and I really don’t know if there are any other real-time races this month, so I signed up for a “virtual” 5k. It’s pretty relaxed, no registration fee, no prizes and no race chip, but I thought what the heck? I’m not sure that it really counts for this month, though, because I was supposed to run it at 9 am, and I didn’t get out until 11:30 am. By the time I got home, the results had already been posted. So, I think I’ll let it technically count, but if I find a “real” race this month I’ll do it.

Anyway, I took a couple of pictures of myself and my sister after our run:

And here’s a picture of my new “Gomer for Life” t-shirt:

So Happy New Year to all you out there! On Sunday, my sister and I are gonna try running for about 8k, and I’m sure I’ll have something interesting to say about that.

Distance: 5.11k

Time: 36:20

Lovely run today. Went out with my sister, and I meant to get a “before” and “after” picture to put up, but I forgot to get her to bring her camera (the iPhone one isn’t that great). It was much less crowded today than on Sunday; that is, until my sister commented on it just before the end of the run. Sure enough, that last bit was full of people, with kids, with dogs, in large groups. She totally jinxed it!

New Year’s Eve is coming up, and although I’m not big on resolutions, I thought of a couple for this year. I figured if I put them here, I might have a better chance of actually following through with them this year. Usually, I stop doing them within a couple of weeks, and I’ve forgotten about them altogether by February. Maybe it’ll be better this year if I’m accountable to you all out there in CyberSpace. So here they are:

  1. Eat at least two fruits and two veggies every day. I know the Canada Food Guide recommends 6-8 each day, but I think that might be a bit ambitious, considering that my current daily intake is often zero. I hope that, once I get in the habit of at least two of each per day, I can work my up.
  2. Run a race every month. This one may be a challenge, both because I don’t even know if there is a race every month in Victoria, and because of potential work conflicts, but I’m gonna try it. And yes, if I run two races in one month, one of them counts for the next month. My resolution, my rules.
  3. Not really running- related, but I’m going to speak up more often. There have been too many times I’ve held my tongue so I don’t hurt some one’s feelings, only to be hurt myself because I didn’t stand up for myself. The trick to this one, of course, is balance. Be assertive, not a steamroller.

What are your New Year’s resolutions?Any dieters out there? People wanting to get more exercise? Tell me about your resolutions. And I’m always looking for a running buddy…
